Pod borer attack in Chickpea during January –February 2016

Present status
The first pod borer appears in in timely sown chickpea was first week of December ( 4-7th)  but there number has not been increased so far( upto 22nd Decemebr). But in delayed sowing it has observed after 15th December, 2015. This year this crop was generally sown late due to low moisture and high air/soil temperature. The area of this crop in Bundelkhand region was drastically reduced during this season 2015-16. The minimum temperature has gone down upto 6-7 degree Celsius. This may limit their number. The air humidity has increased but the cloudless sky has been not observed continuous for more than 4 days.
Forecast for January
The minimum temperature could be below normal and in many cases it will be below 8 degree Celsius. There may be changes of fogging condition in Bundelkhand and these conditions may pose more stress in completing their life.
Ultimately at the end of the January there may be chance of very low night temperature below 3-4 degree C , thus the growth of pod borer in the chickpea could be very low in this month.

Forecast for February

The number may be higher in this month as compared to last (January) month but still lower and not posed any economical damage to the Chickpea crop. The lowest temperature around (1-2 degree C) before 15th February again makes a break in pod borer number. After 15th February, there may be slight increase in pod borer activity in chickpea crop. Hence, farmers are advised to keep watch in their chickpea crop after 15th February.

Possibility of next rainfall in November boost the chickpea and wheat showing in Bundelkhand zone

The light rainfall was received in Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Lalitpur districts of Bundelkhand along with hail. The high wind along with overcast sky and rainfall decreased the maximum temperature by 5-6 °C(degree Celsius). Today minimum temperature is 13.7 °C and dense fog was observed in some area. The average temperature is 18.2°C .
Though the temperature conditions and calendar dates are congenial for rabi sowing but, soil moisture is very low and hence farmers are waiting for another spell of rainfall.

Possibility of next spell of rainfall in November,2015, if occurred  will start sowing of main rabi crops of chickpea and wheat.

Rabi sowing in Bundelkhand area and possibility of rainfall

The high day time temperature will be around normal. The rabi sowing will be started from 1 week of October 2015. Rabi sowing of crops like chickpea, Mustard and Pea has already delayed by 15 days. Hence, farmers keep watch on weather forecast and take a quick decision for sowing of these rabi crops.
There is a change of light rain during this week (26 Oct- 1 Nov, 2015). This will help farmers in their field management for sowing purpose.

Next rainfall may be during November 2015, due to which farmers completed their sowing operation at the end of November 2015.

Soybean yield may be affected in Bundelkand region of M.P.

The farmers of Bundelkhand region was generally sown soybean around 1-2nd week of July, 2015. Now the soybean crop is in flowering stage or will going to inter inR1 (first flower stage) stage during this week (17-23th August, 2015). Crop establishment was fair and till now the crop growth is good. Means the crop has undergone very little environmental stress and successfully entering into reproductive stage. May be stress will be started from now.
The high air temperature is around 32-33°C, but leaf/canopy temperature of Soybean may be higher than the air temperature.
The region received less rainfall (35 % less from Normal rainfall) from their normal value upto 15th August, 2015.
If the rest of the August month received less rainfall than seed number /meter square will be less and seed size will be also affected by low soil moisture, high evapotranspiration rate  and high air temperature( above 34°C).
There is white fly , green semi looper, Griddle B  attack on soybean crop. The cultivar JS 335 has been affected by YMV and more or less the cultivar JS 95-60. If warm temperature prevails further for next one-two weeks, substantial yield loss may occur, which may range from 20-40 % for rainfed conditions. The lower CGR rate, lower N fixation rate, and lower seed number and seed size may play the critical role.

Could foliar liquid nitrogen spray and weekly irrigation may help?  Suggestions invited from agricultural scientists.
